Kirk Cameron

October 2, 1945 - March 27, 2000

Kirk Houston Cameron

Following graduation from Lee, Kirk attended college at UTEP in El Paso before transferring back to Trinity University in San Antonio.  There he majored in biology and chemistry but decided to go into the teaching field.  After obtaining his teacher certification, Kirk coached at several high schools in the San Antonio area including MAC, the West Campus at South San, Lanier, Ft. Sam, Highlands, and Boerne.  As head coach at Lanier, he led the team to the state quarterfinals.

Outside of coaching, Kirk had an interest in coin and sports cards and ran his own shop in San Antonio.  His wife Ann says that he also enjoyed war gaming and had a tremendous collection of metal army men.  He also loved to fresh water fish at Braunig and Calaveras.

Ann says that when Kirk was at UTEP, it was discovered that he had a brain tumor.  This involved surgery and resulted in high doses of medication throughout his life, eventually leading to liver problems and a liver transplant.  He survived the liver transplant but developed lymphoma from all the various surgeries in his lifetime.  He was ill for the last three years of his life.

A few years back when KENS tv ran a special on the famous 1963 Lee-Brackenridge game, the program was dedicated to Kirk.  Kirk played football at Lee and ran track and was also President of the Student Council during his senior year and voted “Most Representative Boy.”  He was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club.

Kirk is survived by his wife, one son, and his mother.

Sweet Kirk,  I remember his laugh!  It wasn't that he was silly or frivolous, but when he found something funny, he couldn't contain his joy.  I loved that about him.
