Mike, your comment says so much about Miguel and how much he was loved by his classmates - but it also says volumes about our fabulous football team, as amazing inside as on the football field.  Thanks for making me even more proud to be part of the Class of '64!

When I read Mike’s remembrances of Miguel, it brought back memories of my own. I played center on the freshman football team before I dropped out of athletics and Miguel played next to me. Miguel was slightly crazy as a football player with a willingness to take a risk and the confidence and humor to always assume he would succeed. He probably sucked all of us into his incredible vortex of energy. When I read Mike’s entry I went to the Wikipedia article on the Vietnam Wall in D.C. That is where I said goodbye to Miguel. It was 1985 and I was in DC for the Marine Corps Marathon and the Wall had just recently been built and opened. The picture in Wikipedia could have been me. It was of someone touching the name of someone they knew. That was how I said goodbye to Miguel.

At the funeral when I introduced myself his fathers eyes lit up and he said," oh you were his number one competitor! " the humbleness that hit me was overwhelming! I went to pay respect for a war hero and our football days were still present. I don't have any other words to convey the impact of that moment!

My last and best memories of Miguel was when he and I and another guy rode with Miguel's brother to Wharton County Junior College to try out for the football team in May of our senior year. He and I roomed together for the weekend and we had a chance to talk and reflect on our years together at Lee. Of course we both were dissapointed when we were not selected to play the next fall. The ride home was a little quiet-but I can recall his last comments about joining the marines and being the best marine he could and make his family proud. I did not realize that this would be our last conversation we would have. I am so sad for his family and their loss and I am sad we lost a great friend and classmate.

What a great thing to be able to hear other's recollections of Miguel. He was such an original!! Always up for a good time, ready to make us laugh. He loved football, but never more than in the rain, he was a real "mudder" in the best way. It made me feel good to know that so many of his friends were able to attend his funeral. I didn't learn of his death 'til later, but was able to visit the Memorial in DC and find his name. It really hits you in the gut......we will always remember.

Several things come to mind, one is Miguel's nickname-No Hair.  He was one of the "gang" in all ways.  The other is the Breckenridge game and some of the antics Miguel did, espcially with the other sides' star running back.  Those of you who were there will recall it, if not call me..

Miguel was a great friend. He always had a great smile and kind words about all. I went to DC and found his name on the wall. He always made me laugh.
