Harvey Stein

Harvey Stein

August 28, 1945 - July 20, 1993

Harvey was born in Laredo, Texas on August 28, 1945.  At the time his parents were living in Monterrey, Mexico where his father was working for a mining company.  His grandparents had purchased a home in Laredo so that when the time came, the Stein children could be born on American soil and not have dual citizenship.  One of his grandfathers was the head of Westinghouse in Mexico, and the other set of grandparents were from Sweden and were waiting to come to the United States.  Everyone in the family was fluent in Spanish.

When the Mexican government began nationalizing many companies, the family moved to San Antonio, settling in the Lee district where Harvey entered Lee as a junior.  Harvey’s sister Charlotte had already graduated from the American school in Monterrey.  Charlotte eventually taught in NEISD at Churchill and later as a half-time counselor at Dellview Elementary.  His sister Karen, who passed away in 2012 , graduated from Lee in 1968.

Following graduation from Lee, Harvey attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos where he earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’’s degree.  Harvey began his career in education in 1970 as a teacher.  He spent a year at the Region 20 Service Center and from 1974-77 he was purchasing agent for the South San School District.  Other positions held included being an assistant principal, vice principal, and assistant superintendent.  In 1979-80 he was acting superintendent of the South San district.  At the time of his death he held the post of instructional development consultant and was working on his doctorate at Texas A&M University as his ambition was to get his Ph.D and teach at the college level.

Outside the realm of the public school, Harvey enjoyed reading and was a history buff with a particular interest in the history of Russia and WWII, as well as the Civil War.  He had visited Washington, D.C. and Civil War battlefields.  He was also an elder at Pilgrim Presbyterian Church.  Harvey’s sister Charlotte says that Harvey had no children, but he was like a father to his nieces and nephews and even took them on vacations.

During most of his life Harvey was plagued with rheumatic arthritis, resulting in multiple surgeries.  He had earlier suffered a heart attack but passed away from a second one on July 20, 1993.  He was 47.
